Maricopa County Waste Resources & Recycling

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

The county provides hazardous waste collection services to residents of unincorporated Maricopa County so they can have a convenient and environmentally safe disposal outlet for their hazardous household waste (HHW). The service reduces illegal disposal of residential hazardous waste in our deserts and landfills. Proper collection and disposal of Household Hazardous Waste protects our air, soil and water from potentially harmful contamination.

PAINT IS NOT ACCEPTED

Maricopa County Transfer Stations do not accept paint, unless it is a household garbage item. Paint becomes household garbage when it is COMPLETELY DRIED OUT and lid removed from paint can.  You may purchase paint hardener at a local hardware store, harden the paint in your can and dispose of it as household garbage.

Is your paint in good condition? Are your cans nearly full? You can search Earth911.com, paint-disposal.com, or call 1800-Clean Up to find a location near you for paint recycling or disposal of your paint cans, spray paint, paint removers, etc.

Some companies or cities within Maricopa County that accept paint either for free or for a fee, some recycle it and some dispose of it.

Maricopa County Transfer Stations will continue to accept batteries, antifreeze, oil as well as CFL's.

Household Hazardous Waste events are held at least once a year and provide all Maricopa County residents an opportunity to clean out their garages and houses and discard their HHW for free. HHW events are held during the cooler months of the year.  If you live within a municipality, please contact your public works department to locate an HHW event or facility.

Residents can discard electronics, tires, batteries, oil and antifreeze at any one of our recycling centers year round.

Common HHW items include:

  1. Antifreeze
  2. Batteries
  3. Cellular Phones
  4. Computers
