Gilbert Road Bridge at Salt River

North and southbound traffic begin sharing northbound Gilbert Road at the Salt River Crossing Monday, February 6th

North and southbound traffic will share the existing northbound Gilbert Road adjacent to the Gilbert Road Bridge with one lane of travel for each direction beginning Monday, February 6th.

Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) crews will gradually shift the two southbound lanes of Gilbert Road traveling from SR 87/Beeline to a single lane of travel on Gilbert Road at the Salt River. Northbound travel on Gilbert Road will continue with the one-lane restriction currently in place.

The configuration of sharing the existing roadway with one lane of travel for each direction will be maintained for the next two years until traffic is switched onto the new bridge.

Drivers will also encounter a newly paved section of Gilbert Road at the low-water crossing at the Salt River. This temporary roadway curve will allow for the construction of the new Gilbert Road Bridge.

Please allow for extra time for travel, watch for construction workers and equipment, obey traffic control signs, and slow down in the work zone.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

(TT0339)

The Maricopa County Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) and the City of Mesa, is constructing a new bridge over the Salt River.

The new four-lane Gilbert Road Bridge will replace the existing two-lane bridge and low water crossing, which can become flooded during high water flows in the Salt River. Located on Gilbert Road between Thomas Road and State Route 87 (Beeline Highway), the bridge will be built in phases and provide two northbound and two southbound lanes. The project includes new pavement, signage and improved drainage in the project area.

Occasional lane restrictions can be anticipated during construction. One lane of travel for both north- and southbound traffic will be accommodated during the construction to ensure a connection to State Route 87.

In the event a full closure occurs due to flooding or water releases by the Salt River Project, MCDOT will provide recommended alternative routes for travel.

Gilbert Road Bridge construction is anticipated to be completed in 2025.
