July 20, 2017 – Following the announced resignation of State Representative Jesus Rubalcava, and in anticipation of the appointment process as outlined in A.R.S. § 41-1202, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors is seeking applicants to fill the Legislative District 4 seat.

By law, the appointee, like Rep. Rubalcava, must meet the following qualification requirements:

  • a Democrat residing in the Maricopa portion of Legislative District 4
  • resided in Arizona at least three years, and
  • resided in Maricopa County at least one year
  • at least 25 years of age

Legislative District 4 runs along the southwestern border of Arizona and includes portions of Maricopa, Pima, and Yuma Counties. State law requires that the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors fill the vacancy because the resigning legislator resides in Maricopa County.

Because there are not 30 elected precinct committeemen for the Democratic Party in Legislative District 4 within Maricopa County, the Board will appoint a citizens’ panel to recommend three qualified candidates to the Board. The Board will then appoint one person from the list submitted by the panel to fill the vacancy.

Applicants should send their letters of interest along with a resume to the Office of the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, 301 W. Jefferson, 10th Floor, Phoenix, AZ 85003 or ClerkBoard@mail.maricopa.gov. Applications will be accepted through Friday, August 4, 2017, but should be submitted as soon as possible. All applicants are subject to background checks.
